Pure is TU/e's system for storing data about research papers that we publish. The public TU/e research portal uses its data, as does your TU/e researcher profile page, and also the publications page on this very website. And even though publication counts are a poor quality metric, they are still taken into account to judge how groups within the university are doing – and these counts are gathered from Pure too. So it is really important that Pure contains correct and up-to-date data.

As soon as a paper gets published, we aim to enter it into Pure as soon as possible. Within ALGO, the guideline is that the (academically) youngest ALGO author on a paper is responsible for inputting that paper into Pure (rationale: the longer someone works here, the more other administrative tasks they generally already have on their plate).

To add a paper in Pure, click the green Add content button and click Research output > Create from template. You then end up with a list of paper types from which it is important to choose the right one, depending on if your paper appeared in a journal, a (weakly or strongly refereed) conference, a poster session, or some other outlet. To make sure we do this consistently, below we describe which Pure paper type to select for your paper.

Alternatively, Pure lets you import papers from other databases such as dblp via Research output > Import from online source. If you do this, please again make sure that you select the right paper type: other databases sometimes have different ideas about which papers get mapped to which Pure paper type.

Paper types

The most important paper types are the following.

• Journal articles use the type Contribution to journal > Article.

• Conference papers can fall into several categories:

  • Papers in conferences or workshops with formally published proceedings, like SoCG, use the type Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceeding > Conference contribution. For this definition conference proceedings count as ‘formally published’ if they are part of a series like LIPIcs or LNCS, or have an ISSN, or are indexed in an aggregator like IEEE Xplore. Some conferences are borderline cases, in this case just make a common sense decision and apply it consistently.
    Examples: CG:MME, DISC, ESA, FOCS, GD, ISAAC, SoCG, SODA, STACS, STOC, SWAT, VIS4DH, WADS.

  • Papers in conferences or workshops without formally published proceedings, like EuroCG, use the type Contribution to conference > Paper.
    Examples: CCCG, CG:YRF, EuroCG.

  • Informal conference abstracts use the type Contribution to conference > Abstract. Here we're talking about one-pagers: fleshed-out ‘abstracts’ like EuroCG papers fall in the previous category instead.

• ArXiv papers should not be entered into Pure (rationale: preprints are not official publications and also shouldn't count for publication metrics).

If a publication could fall into two categories, pick the most prestigious one. For example, if you presented a poster at a conference and a description of that poster was published in the conference's (formally published) proceedings, then pick "papers in conferences or workshops with formally published proceedings" instead of using Pure's poster category.

Fields

Here are the sections in Pure's entry form that you should fill.

• Type. Fill out the Publication category. This is almost always Academic. For some paper types (journal articles, conference papers with formally published proceedings), you're also asked to enter if the paper was peer-reviewed. For our venues, this is almost always the case.

• Publication status. Fill out at least the year.

• Publication information. Fill out the Title and Pages (from-to) (e.g., 22-37, or 7:1-7:8 in the case of LIPIcs).

• Contributors and affiliations. This is where the author list goes. For TU/e staff members, make sure you search for their existing record in Pure instead of making a new ‘external person’.

• Electronic version(s). Add at least a DOI. If your paper is open-access, make sure to indicate it as such, so Pure marks your paper with an orange lock icon (this is important for certain statistics). This will also make the PDF link visible on the TU/e research portal and our publications page. If your paper is not open-access you can still upload a PDF (author final version), which will be available only from the TU/e IP range.

• One more section that depends on the paper type:

  • For journals: Journal. Enter the Journal, Volume, and Issue number.
  • For conference papers in formally published proceedings: Host publication. The ‘host publication’ is what Pure calls the proceedings publication. The Title of the host publication should be enough here: just enter the title as it appears on the cover of the proceedings.
  • For conference papers without formally published proceedings or informal abstracts: Event. Because there is no formal publication that contains your paper, you should instead describe the conference itself here. It would be nice if there were a consistent way to format the conference name, although in practice this is a lost cause. We suggest something like …th European Workshop on Computational Geometry (EuroCG 20…).

You can optionally fill the other sections in the form, but these are not essential. After clicking Save, library staff will review the data you entered and they may add additional information about your paper themselves if they feel like it.

Notes on the ALGO publication page

The publications page on this website gets its data from Pure. Since the Pure API is very slow, our system imports all publications from Pure into our own database, and shows them from there. This import process is triggered manually using this page.

To decide which papers ‘belong to ALGO’ (and hence should be shown on the page) we ignore Pure's ‘organisational unit’ field (as it is frequently wrong) and instead use a list of ALGO members. A paper ‘belongs to ALGO’ if it has at least one ALGO member in its author list. If some or all of your publications fail to show up on the publication page, we probably do not have your Pure user ID in our staff database yet. Please send the title of one of your papers in Pure to Willem so that your ID can be added (note to Willem: figure out the ID by searching for the title here and add it in config/staff.yml).

If some data is incorrect on the publications page, but it looks correct in Pure, ask Willem to fix it. In particular, the publications page on the ALGO website uses a simple heuristic based on the conference name to figure out if a conference is ‘strongly refereed’ or ‘weakly refereed’. If your paper is classified incorrectly, this can be fixed by ading the conference name to the list (note to Willem: see includes/vendor/aga/Site/Sync.php, line 169).
